Legal Structure

General Directorate of Cinema, in accordance with the enactment of the law no 662 and on the date of 02.11.2011, was organised as a main service unit of The Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

History

The first governmental institution related to cinema, General Directorate of Cinema, was founded under the authority of the Ministry of Culture, the department of Fine Arts in 1977. Later, it was decided that the department of literary and artistic works and the department of cinema were to be united because of their close resemblance in terms of subject and service. The new structure which is the General Directorate of Cinema and Copyright was constituted in accordance with the enactment of the law no 379 published on the official gazette numbered 20334 on November 6th, 1989.

With the organisation of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as two different ministries, ministry headquarters was designed as the executive unit of the Ministry of Culture by operation of the law number 354 concerning the organisational functions of the ministry. After the unity of the Ministries of Culture and Tourism according to the law number 4848 on April 16th 2003, the department resumed it's activities as one of the major service units of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. In accordance with the enactment of the law General Directorate of cinema and copyright, the department of copyright and the General Directorate of Cinema were reconstructed on November 2nd 2011. General Directorate of cinema continues it's service on Anafartalar Street no 67 on the third floor of the old historical courthouse building in Ulus.

With the new structure; a specialised unit will be launched, in the light of the emerging mission and vision a new course of action will be carried out, holding a crucial position in the culture industry, the field of cinema, will be achieved to transform into a culture industry and the development of the creative economies will be supported with larger contribution.
