Over 71,1 million admissions, +22% on 2016

With 71,1 million tickets sold in 2017 in Turkey, Gross Box Office (GBO) rose by 26% compared with 2016. For the first time, admissions broke through the 70 million barrier.

In 2017, Turkish films generated 40,2 million admissions, 29% more than in 2016. After a two year stagnation period Turkey, the seventh largest European cinema market, registered an impressive growth in cinema attendance with admissions growing by 22% from 58,2 million to 71,1 million tickets sold.

Turkey confirmed its leading position in terms of national market share with Turkish films capturing 56,60% of admissions in 2017.

148 Turkish Films Released and 863 Millions TL in Revenue

With 148 Turkish films which were released in 2017 in Turkey, a new record was broken in this area. In 2017, 235 foreign films were released and the total number of films reached 383.

In 2017, Turkish films achieved 473 million TL in box office revenue (+34% compared with 2016). Revenue of movie theater box offices totaled 863 million TL (+26%), which was the highest result by now. On the other hand, revenue grew slightly more than admissions. Consequently, the average revenue per admission amounted to 12 TL in 2017. 

Turkish Comedies on the Top in 2017

In 2017, comedy was the most popular genre among Turkish cinema goers in 2017, taking 39% of the admission. The top film of the year was Recep İvedik 5.

Animation films’ market share was 11,5% in Turkey. 45 films were released, 4 of which were Turkish animation. 54 horror films were released in 2017. The market share of this genre was %5.

10 Films over 1 Million Admissions

In 2017 first place at the box office was taken by Recep İvedik 5, with 7,43 million admissions. The Turkish drama, Ayla, claimed second place, with 5,28 million admissions. Another Turkish comedy film, Aile Arasında, was ranked third in 2017, with 3,38 million admissions. In 2017, the four most successful films accounted for 18,9 million admissions, or 27% of the annual total for feature films.

In 2017, 10 films gathered more than 1 million admissions and seven of the top 10 films were Turkish.

Turkish Films in Europe

In 2017, 22 Turkish films were released in Europe. The biggest market was Germany and %65 of box office was earned in Germany.Netherlands ranked second, Belgium ranked third.
